Why Developers Should Care About Color
Color isn't just an aesthetic choice — it directly impacts usability, accessibility, and user trust. Understanding color theory helps you make informed decisions even without a designer on the team.
The 60-30-10 Rule
The classic interior design ratio works beautifully in UI: 60% dominant color (backgrounds), 30% secondary (cards, sections), 10% accent (CTAs, highlights). This creates visual hierarchy without chaos.
Contrast and Accessibility
WCAG requires a contrast ratio of at least 4.5:1 for normal text and 3:1 for large text. Tools like Stark and axe help you verify compliance, but training your eye to spot low-contrast issues is even better.
Dark Mode Isn't Just Inverted Colors
A good dark theme uses desaturated colors, elevated surfaces instead of shadows, and reduced contrast for large text. Simply inverting your light palette looks harsh and amateur.
